ARTIST: The Path of Creativity

Rock-Woman-web

“Why should we all use our creative power…?  Because there is nothing that makes
people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting
and the accumulation of objects and money.”
Brenda Ueland

Always a playful inventor of an artful life, I only came to serious art making after I moved to Tucson, Arizona in 2003 and discovered WomanKraft, Center for Art, Education, and Culture www.womankraft.org where I began to take classes offered by inspired and inspiring women artists who gave me permission to play, make a mess, and unearth my creative potential.

I believe art is a universal language illuminating the whole of human experience and that art touches, teaches, and transforms lives.  Being an artist is my way of being fully engaged in the world, on a path of seeing and appreciating the small strokes of light and the lavish dashes of color present in the natural world around me

My artistic work is as a poet and a paper maker, a wordsmith and a bookmaker, a mask and metal sculpture maker, and an exuberant “artist of the ordinary” in my home and garden.

I create installations and alter books. I conspire ceremonies and spiritual celebrations for which I create transformation vestments. I am an eccentric innovator, working to make technique subservient to poetic and imaginative vision
.

I work in clay, paint, write poems and write books, puppets and masks.  I also make art that replicates archaeological remains, artifacts and ceremonial tools.

My artistic specialties include making spiritual effigies, talismans, shrines and objects of spirit. I work with collage, assemblage, paint, clay, batik, metal, and found objects.  Imaginatively deft, unselfconsciously expressive, I use random ephemera as sources of inspiration.

My art is centered in intensity and inwardness, beyond academic models, unhindered by convention. I live in a constant state of Muse worship!

I conduct dozens of Artistic Salons each year in all aspects of mixed media, including; puppet theater, altered books, artist’s trading cards, artist journals, and paper mache sculpture.

I am an active member of PaperWorks www.paperworks.info , the Sonoran Collective for Paper and Book Artists, where I was the winner of the Barbara Lewis Scholarship.  I enjoy making handmade paper and books and I have taught classes in these arts to adults and children for five years.  I am the Vice President of WomanKraft Center For The Creative Arts in Tucson, Arizona and founder of Manic Expressives, a rural collective of feminist artists dedicated to “making art that makes a difference.”

Manic Expressives’ Mission is to Ignite!  Empower!  & Unite
!

Being an artist opens endless new possibilities in me and lends my work a spiritual quality of optimism and joy.  Making art is dabbling in magic, walking in beauty, celebrating one’s creative sensuality.  Sharing one’s art is sharing one’s soul and I have discovered that teaching art is lending me new languages of self-expression and personal revelation.

I offer a variety of multi-media arts classes, creativity workshops, creative play days, artist dates, and one day inspiration recharging retreats.

My goal in these workshops is to assist others in recovering their passions and reigniting their creative imaginations.  Suitable for small groups of friends or individuals hoping to meet other”cultural creatives,” my workshops and salons focus on inspiration retrieval, artistic affirmation, and personal evolution.

Nothing in my life enriches me, challenges me, exasperates me, delights me, or absorbs me more than making art!  I hope to share joy, inspiration, and general wonderment in my workshops.

I believe creativity needs to become a daily, doable, non-negotiable activity and that as our creative gestation develops, our inner lives gain more primacy and meaning.
